Magical Castle Leslie Estate, Located in Glaslough, County Monaghan, is one of the few remaining Irish estates still owned and managed by its founding family. Its history spans over 350 years evolving from a strategic Military post into a unique luxury hotel. The Castle which sits on 1,000 acres of untouched Irish countryside, amongst ancient woodland and serene lakes, is now a unique luxury Hotel.

The estate’s history in Ireland began when Bishop John Leslie, known as the “Fighting Bishop” for defeating Cromwellian forces, purchased the Glaslough lands for £2,000. The money was a reward from King Charles II for his loyalty during the Restoration.

The present structure, designed in the Scottish Baronial style, was completed in 1878 for Sir John Leslie, 1st Baronet. It replaced an earlier 17th-century mansion.

The Leslies have long been known for their unique character. Famous guests over the years include W.B. YeatsMick Jagger, and Michael Collins. The family is also related to the Churchill family through marriage. The family traces its lineage back to Bartholomew Leslie, a Hungarian nobleman who became chamberlain to Scotland’s Queen Margaret.

A fun fact, The castle famously houses the oldest plumbed bathtub in Ireland. The estate is also well-known for its ghost stories, most notably that of Norman Leslie, who reportedly haunts the “Red Room”.

After decades of decline, the lady of the castle, Sammy Leslie spearheaded a massive restoration project in the 1990s, transforming the crumbling estate into a world-class destination.
