JR: The Belair Hotel is famously “nestled in the living rock” overlooking the Bay of Naples. How does this unique architectural integration with the cliffside enhance the guest experience and present unique operational considerations?

The Belair Hotel’s iconic location atop a majestic 50-meter cliff overlooking the Gulf of Naples is more than a poetic description, it represents a powerful fusion of architecture and nature that deeply enhances the guest experience while also introducing distinct operational challenges. The hotel’s position offers uninterrupted views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the Sorrentine coastline, creating an unforgettable visual experience. Our Guests often describe a sense of serenity and connection to nature, enhanced by the seamless blending of stone, sea, and sky.

Being built into the rock gives the property a distinctive architectural identity, one that feels rooted in history and local tradition. It evokes a romantic and timeless Mediterranean charm that modern builds can seldom replicate. The surrounding rock helps regulate indoor temperatures naturally, offering cooler interiors in summer and some insulation in cooler months adding comfort while reducing energy use. The sheer physical inaccessibility of the cliffside contributes to a sense of exclusivity and privacy, key selling points for luxury travellers.

JR: Every room and suite at the Belair boast a sea view. How do you leverage Vesuvius, the Bay, and Sorrento’s spectacular vistas in the hotel’s design, dining experiences, and overall guest journey?

At the Belair Hotel the surrounding views are not just a backdrop: they are a central character in the guest experience. By embedding these vistas into the hotel’s physical design, dining, and emotional journey, the property turns its natural assets into enduring moments of wonder and serenity. This concept is loudly expressed by our payoff: “Seaside luxury, home comfort” along with the promise that “every moment comes with a view.”

Floor-to-ceiling windows, private balconies, and expansive terraces are standard features, ensuring that Guests are constantly connected to the landscape, from morning sunrise to twilight reflections on the bay. Spaces are thoughtfully designed to face the sea, with beds, baths, private pools and even seating areas positioned to maximize the view. This creates an almost cinematic experience of the outside world. Interior décor often echoes the surrounding environment: light greens, tones of purples, soft blues, sun-bleached whites, and earthy tones that reflect the sea, sky, and cliffside.

Dining terraces are strategically perched to offer sweeping vistas. Guests enjoy breakfast, sunset aperitifs, or candlelit dinners with Vesuvius silhouetted in the distance, a natural spectacle that elevates even the simplest meal into a memorable event. The connection between plate and place deepens the sensory experience of the setting. Lighting, music, and service pacing are adjusted to harmonize with the changing views: sunrise tranquillity, golden hour warmth, or starlit calm, each enhancing the mood and emotional impact.

JR: Sorrento is a destination rich in history and culture. How does Belair Hotel connect its guests to the authentic essence of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, both within the property and through recommended experiences?

The Belair Hotel serves as both a luxurious retreat and a cultural gateway, thoughtfully connecting Guests to the authentic essence of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Through architecture, curated experiences, partnerships, and personalized service, the hotel weaves local history, craftsmanship, cuisine, and lifestyle into every aspect of our guest’s journey. Belair’s Front Office and Concierge Team is mainly made by Sorrento natives or long-time residents, offering Guests heartfelt, insider recommendations, from where to find the best ‘spaghetti alle vongole’ to which artisan workshop still uses traditional wood inlay techniques. Whether a guest is interested in music, history, cuisine, or wellness, the hotel can customize itineraries that reflect the real soul of the Amalfi Coast, not just the postcard version. Having centuries-old continuity, the Hotel Belair is a cultural ambassador of the region embedding local traditions, flavours, and stories into every detail of the guest experience, ensuring that each stay offers not just comfort and beauty, but a meaningful connection to Sorrento timeless spirit.

JR: How does being a family-owned hotel influence Belair’s unique character, long-term vision, and personalized service to guests?

The Belair Hotel’s family ownership is not just a fact, it’s a defining feature of its charm, integrity, and success. It creates a rare blend of hospitality with heart, where every guest is treated like an honoured visitor in a beloved home, and every decision is made with care, vision, and deep respect for the legacy of Sorrento.

Since the ‘60s the Hotel has always been the exclusive property of the Russo family and from 2022 has been managed by the Architect Mario Russo, my dad! In 2026, we will proudly celebrate sixty years of unparalleled excellence and hospitality. As a family, we have always considered the hotel as our home while aiming to offer to our Guests a sense of being welcomed into someone’s home rather than checking into a generic property. The ambiance is warm, gracious, and quietly elegant, less about show, more about soul.

The family heritage profoundly shapes the Belair’s identity, distinguishing it from corporate hospitality models by fostering a deep sense of authenticity, care, and continuity. This familial foundation influences everything, from the hotel’s atmosphere and service ethos to its long-term vision and emotional connection with Guests. It influences operations and corporate management as well, meaning that decisions are made with generational impact in mind, not just quarterly results. Investments in quality, preservation, and guest experience take precedence over aggressive expansion. Changes—whether renovations, upgrades, or new services—are introduced carefully, always aligned with the hotel’s core values and the expectations of loyal Guests. The result is a place that evolves without losing its soul. The hotel’s culture isn’t dictated by trends or corporate mandates, but by generations of knowledge, tradition, and love for the place and its people. One of the biggest achievements for us is having many Guests returning year after year, drawing not just by the beauty of the location but by the personal bonds formed. Repeater Guests are welcomed like old friends, often greeted by me and my family.

JR: Beyond the stunning views, what do you believe is the Belair Hotel’s “soul,” something uniquely derived from its family legacy?

Beyond the privileged location, the true “soul” of the Belair Hotel lies in its deeply rooted family legacy of heartfelt hospitality, pride of place, and quiet elegance, a soul that cannot be replicated, only inherited and nurtured over time. At Belair, hospitality isn’t a profession, it’s a tradition, passed down like a cherished recipe or a family heirloom. There’s an instinctive warmth and sincerity in how Guests are welcomed and cared for, not because it’s policy, but because it’s personal. This emotional intelligence, refined through generations, creates a feeling of belonging rather than just staying. The soul of Belair is ultimately found in the small moments: a handwritten welcome note, a familiar face at breakfast, a recommendation that leads to a hidden gem, or a goodbye that feels like “until next time.” These are gestures born from a family’s desire not just to host, but to share what they love.

JR: The Calypso Restaurant emphasizes traditional Sorrentine cuisine revisited with creativity. How do you ensure the culinary offerings reflect the region’s rich gastronomic heritage while innovating for contemporary palates?

At Calypso Restaurant, the philosophy is to honour tradition while embracing evolution, a balance that allows Guests to savour the soul of Sorrentine cuisine with a modern, refined twist. The result is a dining experience that is both rooted and inspired, paying homage to local culinary heritage while meeting the expectations of today’s discerning global travellers. The menus, monthly changed by following nature’s rhythm, are built around ingredients native to the Sorrentine Peninsula—lemons from local groves, fresh seafood from the Gulf, handmade pasta, and produce from nearby farms. These ingredients anchor each dish in authenticity. Signature local recipes such as ‘gnocchi alla sorrentina’ or ‘delizia al limone’ are preserved in spirit, even when reinterpreted. The goal is never to replace tradition but to reimagine it with elegance. The Executive Chef Salvatore Galano with his Team brings personal creativity to the table, introducing signature dishes that surprise and delight without losing touch with tradition.
